The Living Room

Our living room is 25 square meters. When we first bought the house it had plastered walls and various types of flowered wallpaper which I immediately painted white, so not many photos of how ugly it really was have survived. The previous owners had a built in armoire made out of plywood and faux finished to look like wood grain. It was horrid and smelled like must.

We took sledghammers to the walls and ceilings and dug out stones and old pine beams. We replaced all the single pane windows and put in a metal staircase where the "lovely" armoire was so we could connect the living room to the second floors future library/office. We also decided to open up the area between the kitchen and the living room a by carefully bashing out another wall. This turned out to be a huge structural project for my husband Seb, but it paid off, really opening up the house in the end.

before with ugly built in armoire, old plastered walls and old windows

...after with new stairs and windows and the stonework exposed

Seb sits in front of the wall we tore out to open up the living rooom to the kitchen

...and here it is just after the tear out, looking into the kitchen. Notice we also had to tear out the old first floor w.c. You can see the toilet sitting there all alone.
