Au travail!
the kitchen and the upstairs bedroom & bathroom...dismantled!
My in-laws arrived on Saturday and we spent the day lounging by the lake. We really wanted to dive in and work, but they had just arrived so we figured we had better start slowly and not drag my father-in-law into the house project too rapidly. So, we eagerly began the work on Sunday morning.
We had already collected our new beams from the sawmill on Wednesday and so Sunday was spent removing the old beams from the kitchen. We sawed off the ends as close to the wall as we could. They came out with lots of tugging and pulling, but eventually came out nonetheless. After all, I think they've been in there for a few hundred years. I don't think I'd want to come out after that long either!
Now there are no ceilings on the two floors. How funny to look upwards from the first floor of the kitchen and see nothing but empty space all the way to the roof. Our minds are spinning with ideas for raising the ceilings, building skylights, and multi-leveled passageways. Empty spaces can do that to a couple of crazed renovators full of ideas from the various issues of Maison et Travail.
In the end we're just putting it all back together just like it was, only newer. And it's a very good thing too. The poor old beams were a mess!
the old beams weren't exactly what you'd want holding up your bathroom

I like your blog- you guys are undertaking an amazing amount of work. I look forward to watching the progress and I totally understand the impatience on waiting for things. We started our kitchen over a year ago. We have running water now, but still not entirely done. Working only weekends and doing most ourselves alone, takes time! Good luck with the beams.
